WINGS

4.1

out of 5

Right now my main focus is on ending genocide in Darfur, Sudan. Last year my friend and I started our own organization called RADD, which stands for Raising Awareness Destination: Darfur. We first learned about the situation in Darfur 2 years ago, when we were in 7th grade. We wanted to see Hotel Rwanda, but we didn't really know what it was about. My mom explained it to us on the way to the movie theater, and after the movie we're sooo upset. We couldnt believe that the world sat by and did nothing while 800 thousand Rwandans burtally died. On the way home my mom told us about the current genocide happening in Darfur, Sudan. A few days later I read an article in the New York Times about Darfur and I showed it to my friend. They was a quote saying how if every member on Congress recived 100 letters saying that the US had to do something about Rwanda, the US gov'ts response to the genocide would have been different. We decided that if that would have worked during the Rwandan genocide it might work on stopping the Darfur genocide. So we did letter writing tables at our public library and got a huge response. Then we decided that we needed to do something larger, so we organized Dance for Darfur: An African Dance Party for Relief. After that we started RADD and since then we have been doing aton of events. As for Peace Activism in general, I am an active member of NJ Students for Peace, which has become a huge part of my life. We do so much, I cant write it all here. We are doing a death penalty protest in 2 weeks and holding a PEACE Conferecne in May.

You're doing a great job! I was thinking about starting my own Darfur saving group. Keep doing and what you're doing and I'm sure you'll make a difference.

Hey, I started learning about the atrocities in Darfur. A few friends of mine did a small research project and there is no lack of knowledge within the political community...just the hearts to stand up for whats obviously right. I would love to become a member of your organization. Send me a link. Thanks and God bless.

i really like what you are doing. It seems to be working and the idea of getting the community involved by setting up tables at the library, probably really helped too. Unfortunately, Congress is still not doing much about the Darfur situation.
